SM MALL of ASIA, a Guide to Hot Spots

The SM Mall of Asia is the staggering centerpiece of the Sy family’s Mall army. The Sy’s have always been known for their great and beautiful malls located all over the Philippines. Each mall outside of Metro Manila has practically become a tourist destination especially for the unique ones such as SM City Baguio.

But to say that SM Mall of Asia is just like any other mall is like saying that a Rolls Royce is just like any other car.

To discuss Mall of Asia in length would take a long time and you still wouldn’t be able to see how awesome it is. Malls are meant to be walked through, not discussed in an article. But here’s a short guide to show you some of the awesome spots anyway.

1)      IMAX Center- Unequivocally, the SM Mall of Asia is best known for its IMAX theater. Nowhere else can one have the IMAX experience in the Philippines and this is primarily why a lot of people want to watch movies here especially when the movie is in 3D.
2)      Concert Area- A phenomenon happened a few years ago and a lot of concerts started finding their way to the backyards and other spots around Mall of Asia. A lot of international stars and local artists found their way showcasing their wares in the SMX Convention Center, the grounds behind MOA or the awesome concert hall with a backdrop of the world famous sunset behind it. Tens of thousands make the drive to MOA just to see them and it’s usually an incredible show.
3)      Restobars- Lining up the Manila Bay, several restobars have cropped up right outside the main mall. These bars used to be along Roxas Blvd. but they have sice relocated to Mall of Asia. I think it’s a great thing.
4)      Ice Skating Rink- SM Mall of Asia revived the ice skating craze in the Philippines of the 90s in their spectacular mall. The skating rink is amazing and they have various programs that help train rookies and, surprisingly, some world champions in the ice skating scene.
5)      Sightseeing spot- Like I stated, SM Malls have become tourist attractions. Manila Bay itself is an amazing sight and the Mall of Asia helps maximize this priceless beauty by setting up areas where one can enjoy the view. They have viewing platforms and bridgeways to help people out. And when the World Pyolympics arrive for their annual competition involving fireworks, the place simply explodes.

1)      SM Mall of Asia

Okay I may be guilty of advertising SM too much in this site but still, there’s a valid reason for it. SM Mall of Asia is one of the premiere Gimik destinations in the country and it may not only be the Mall itself but the entire area that’s fronting the World Famous Manila Bay. SM Mall of Asia is located at the other end of EDSA and right before the edge of the Manila Bay. It’s the country’s biggest mall and is third biggest in the world. That in itself is an attraction no doubt together with it’s eclectic design but one of the biggest draws of this complex is the IMAX cinema. The IMAX cinema allows Filipinos to experience a whole new level of film viewing especially when the movie is in 3-D.

Outside the Mall is a new addition to the complex. There is a slew of Restaurants where one can have an enjoyable night away from the mall shoppers. Incidentally, these are some of the restobars that used to line up the streets of Baywalk, Roxas Boulevard before it was taken out by the new City Government. It may be all for the best as the original site is devoid of any parking plans and could be very dangerous at times. This place on the other hand offers better security and accessibility for gimik-goers.

Weekend nights are especially a great time to go here as there is a fireworks display at around 7:00 pm. Moreover, the World Pyrolympics compete here yearly and if you do get the chance to catch it, you’re in for a wonderful treat.

2)      Malate

We can’t end a Gimik Spot article without mentioning Malate. It has been a Gimik hot spot far too long to be forgotten. For the people who are from the North of Manila, going to Malate is like a trek to a very special place, perhaps a hallowed ground. People there have only heard of the stories coming from the people of Manila as to how Malate is such a magical, nay, enchanted place to visit especial at night during the weekends.

Maybe they’re exaggerating a bit but still, going out and walking on the streets of Malate area is still a wonderful treat. Malate is considered as an artist’s locale as many young indie performers show off their talent in each of the specially-themed restobar in the vicinity. People flock to see up and coming artists as well as old favorites perform songs that are way out of the usual fare that you hear on the radio or any other mainstream media.

Gimik places are a dime a dozen in Metro Manila and there will be many more that will pop up in the very near future. Filipinos work hard and party hard and they could be planning a gimik as early as Tuesday night. There are indeed many places where one can go on a gimik and it may ll depend on the type of ambience, crowd or music that you want. Rest assured, however, that you will not run out of a gimik place when you’re in Manila.
