Above: Mount Mayon

The strength behind the volcano that stands high amongst the land of Cagsawa. Mount Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines with a record of 47 eruptions. From its first eruption in 1616 till 2002, it had killed over 1300 people, leaving thousands of people homeless due to its eruption.

The most recent eruptions that occurred was in 1947, 1984, and 1993, where the eruption started with an explosion. And after an hour later, lava starts to flow with a mixture of hot gases and dry rock masses coming out of the crater. The eruption in 1993 killed 68 people, and led the need to evacuate 60,000 people.

The beauty of this mountain had withstood an ageless time. A strato volcano in its extreme splendore, standing tall up to 2462 meters above sea level. A very steep sided mountain composed of alternating layers of melted lava which is called magma originally coming out from the crater. With other volcanic materials such as ash layers.

It would be a challenge to climb up this mountain for the main and obvious reason that its steep, but this kind of challenge inspired climbers to take the leap. The best start would be on a 762 above sea level, it s a place where a station is situated. From there, there’s a trail already that slowly peaks in a second level of green forest. Again, it is not an easy climb especially during the last 540 meters where the rock slopes begin.
