Vilma and Nora

6) Nora vs. Vilma

In all fairness to Sharonians (Sharon Cuneta Fans), the rivalry is really strictly between Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos. Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos are the two most popular and giftedactresses in Philippine history and by far they are the most bankable. Every movie is like an event and with their name attached to it, the film could do no wrong.

This also means that they almost always go head to head in awards shows and in the Philippines there are a handful of them. I seriously do not know if theirs were strictly professional but on several occasions, when one wins the Best actress award, the other has the penchant to walk out of the ceremony.

None of the two appear much in movies lately however. Nora now lives in the US and Vilma is the Goverrnor of Batangas Province. However, when they do make movies, expect fireworks when award season comes.

7)      Jollibee vs. McDonald’s

True, McDonald’s is not a local fast food chain but this rivalry should still be in this list because such can only happen in the Philippines. These two fast food chains are by far the most popular. So popular in fact that most fast food chains that have come out to challenge them either fold up within a few years or are forced to make their operations smaller in scale and pick their spots. The names like Wendy’s, Carl’s Jr., Cindy’s, and Burger King all started like a house on fire but eventually had to choose the areas where the two giants aren’t available or fold up operations.

For now, Jollibee has been beating up McDonald’s which otherwise is still a solid number two. Jollibee has an edge in capturing the Filipino taste in almost every food item they serve. Where there’s a Jollibee, there usually is a McDonald’s right around the corner, fighting them for customers.

8)       SM vs. Robinson’s

This is another business rivalry that has been heating up as of late. SM and Robinson’s are the biggest Mall developers in the country and they are owned by two of the best business minds in the country, Mr. Henry Sy and Mr. John Gokongwei. One look around Metro manila and you will see how much of a rivalry these two have. There are a lot of locations where one mall is fronted by the other. In Ortigas area, there is the SM Megamall. The former flagship mall of Henry Sy. Less than a kilometer from that megastructure is Robinson’s Galleria. In Marikina / Pasig area, we have Robinson’s Metro East and SM City Marikina. In other places such as Manila, San Fernando, Cavite, and other cities, the malls are right in front of each other.

This of course favors the Filipinos who have developed a mall culture. Malls have become hang-out places as well as tourist destinations for some. SM and Robinson’s supply Filipinos with good restaurants and pleasant movie theaters and their rivalry definitely benefits the common Filipino.
