3)      ABS-CBN vs GMA

ABS-CBN and GMA are the two giant networks in Philippine Television. Unlike in the US where actors can promote their show on different networks, the same cannot be said when these two networks are involved. This is because most of the actors have exclusive television deals with each network and therefore they cannot be seen or promote their shows in the other network.

It really wasn’t like this before but as television became more and more powerful and cinema became less so because of Hollywood films, networks started to invest on actors and they do this through tv series and soaps. They do not want to build up or make a middle of the road actor very popular and then sign on to another deal with the other network as soon as their series ends. Thus both networks pretend that the other does not exist… unless the other one is involved in a scandal and when that happens, they dig up as much dirt as possible in the name of journalism.

4)      Ateneo vs. De La Salle

Perhaps no school rivalry is stronger or more fierce than the rivalry between these two academic institutions. For sure some may match the intensity but I doubt that the same can be surpassed. These two institutions are rivals in everything from basketball, to academics to the business community as well as the political world. The same is particularly intense for those who were in the institutions since childhood as hating the other is as much part of the curriculum as algebra. Chances are, if you were from Ateneo, you do not have a green article f clothing and as a Lasallite, you abhor the color blue.

The rivalry can also turn ugly at times as when during the NCAA days, when both schools were part of the same Athletic tournament, fights in the stands would be extremely commonplace during a basketball game. It became so violent that Ateneo left the tournament altogether and joined another one. Only to be followed by De La Salle a few years later. Did I tell you that Ateneo is a Jesuit School and De La Salle is run by Sallasian brothers?

5)      Danding Cojuangco vs. Lucio Tan

In the business scene in the Philippines, there are several players that people know of. Some are combative while some are friendly to others. In light of this, there is an intense rivalry between San Miguel Big Boss, Danding Cojuangco and Lucio Tan who owns Tanduay. These two have been rivalries for as long as one remembers and shady moves from both sides have been known to have occurred. One of the biggest issues hat has happened recently is when Tan produced his own gin brand to rival the hugely popular Ginebra San Miguel of Cojuangco. Tan decided to name his own Gin “Ginebra Kapitan” stating that the term “Ginebra” is a generic term meaning gin and could therefore could not be copyrighted. Tan obviously wanted to capitalize on the market of people who often go to the stores and ask the vendor, for Ginebra. If the person is not specific, Tan’s own brand could be offered and with the almost similar design, the buyer would be none the wiser. A lawsuit of course shot up and for now at least, Tan’s Ginebra has been renamed “Gin…”
